Fernando Caruncho

CEO and Founder of Caruncho Garden & Architecture
Biography

Fernando Caruncho is a Spanish landscape designer and the CEO and Founder of Caruncho Garden & Architecture. Known for his minimalist garden designs that make use of light and organic shapes, Caruncho has become a significant figure in the field of landscape architecture.

Caruncho established his own studio in 1979. His first notable work came at the age of 21 with a house in Madrid, which was published in VOGUE Decoration in May 1987, edited in Paris. His second major publication was in July 1992 in the same magazine, following special features on Jacques Wirtz and Russell Page. Written by Jean-Paul Pigeat, Director General of Jardines de France and founder of the Festival des Jardins Chaumont-sur-Loire, this feature highlighted Caruncho as one of the top landscape designers of the time, making him the youngest among his peers.

Caruncho’s career includes a series of projects in Spain, deeply influenced by the rich tradition of Spanish gardens such as the Alhambra, Patio de los Naranjos, and the Alcazar in Seville. After 15 years of intense experience, he undertook his first project in the United States, and subsequently worked in France, Italy, and many other countries. His international career has included projects in Cotswolds in England, Marrakech in Morocco, Oakland in New Zealand, and Tokyo in Japan.

His most recent projects are in Lugano, Switzerland; Isola Bella, a project of an island in Maine; Fundación Botín in collaboration with Renzo Piano in Santander, Spain; a seaside project in Greece; and a vineyard project at Vigneto de L’Amastuola in Apulia, Italy.

Fernando Caruncho is an honorary member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno of Florence and a member of the Circulo Fortuny of the European Cultural and Creative Industries Alliance.
